Manos Rovithis Painting - Hydra Waterfront
Manos Rovithis (1927 - 1998) Manos was born in Athens, Greece, in November of 1927. He was raised and educated in Paris, France, where he attended the Grande Chaumiere Art School, and in the sixties he continued his education at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. Manos's work carries the influence of Dufatrel, an impressionistic painter and family friend. The spontaneity and sensuality of his paintings are reminiscent of the work of Van Gogh and Cézanne. Indeed his impressionistic treatment of light and color reflect the very emotional character and personality of Manos himself. During the 1950’s Manos exhibited in France and during the 1960’s he showed his work in Greece and Germany. Following his persecution by Greek police in 1960 for having painted twelve nudes in his Kardhisa Exhibition (he was not convicted), Manos became well known throughout the entire continent. In 1963, he made Canada his home and this move coincided with a change in his painting technique. Since that date Manos has put aside his brushes, and worked exclusively with palette knives. Manos found that his palette knife technique provides him with a greater freedom of expression, and has worked to perfect this very distinctive and unique style of painting. Between 1965 and 1968, Charles Lombardo of Trenton, New Jersey, was Manos’ exclusive agent for all his paintings that were sold in the United States of America. Mano has shown his own work and has had numerous exhibitions in most of the major cities of the United States of America. In June of 1985, the Embassy of Greece, to exhibit his work and represent Greece at the U.N.E.S.C.O. congress held in Ottawa, Canada, chose him. He has also continued to show his work in Europe, and is considered to be one of the best Greek artists. Collectors of his works include the Archbishop Iakovos, leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America, Prime Minister of Greece, Andreas Papandreou, Prime Minster of Canada, Brian Mulroney, Ambassador of Greece in China, Emmanuel Megalokonomou, General Consul of Greece in Toronto, John Thomoglou, the famous collection of O.J. Firestone, and that of the Suzuki of Tokyo, and many more. Manos Rovithis was also represented for over 10 years by Avondale Galleries Inc., in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Mr. Rovithis died on May 11, 1998.
